Designing a Screened Porch

You always wanted a screened porch and are ready to build one, but don’t know where to start.  When designing a screened porch, there are a few things to focus on to achieve a great looking porch. Important considerations should include size, site, building structure, fixtures and furnishing, accessibility, architectural compatibility with your existing home and cost.

Size.  Consider the function of the porch to help decide the size. Dining only.  Outdoor living room.  Entertaining.

Location.  Where are you picturing your porch.  What is your view. Privacy.

Building Structure.  Consider the roof type.  Height off ground.  Material choices.

Fixtures and furnishings. Electrical outlets.  Lighting and fans.  Ceiling and floor finish.  Furniture placement.

Accessibility. Doors leading from the inside to the porch.  Doors to the outside.  Traffic flow.

Architectural compatibility.  Will the finished structure blend with your home’s style and add character and value?

Cost.  Have a budget and be realistic with it.

A well designed and well-built screened porch should add value, function, character, and enjoyment to your home.  It will get you outside, comfortable, and protected from the sun, rain and bugs.
