This weekend we are participating in a home show in Winston-Salem NC. This is a quality home and garden show and in the past a variety of trades and vendors participated. For 2012 the show moved to another physical location in Winston-Salem and I do not know if that will have an effect on the show’s future but I am struck by the dwindling variety of vendors. Perhaps this can be explained by the economic downturn and financial woes. For many small business’s it has been tough to stay afloat when concerned Americans are not willing to spend money in difficult times. Judging from this show many of past years participates are gone. Whether it means they were unwilling or unable to put forth the time, effort and money it takes to be in the show or they are really gone and out of business. I also notice very few home builders participating and those that are here have recreated themselves into re-modelers. Nurseries and landscapers not only sell plants and install them they build outdoor kitchens and other outdoor structures. It is a sign of the times to re-create your business to stay in business.
After walking around the show this year I fee even more blessed that for over 21 years, Archadeck of the Piedmont Triad, has been in the same line of business, in the same locale and continues to build the same quality outdoor structures like decks, screened porches, sun-rooms, pergolas and more. We have been lucky yes but we know our business and did not have to recreate ourselves and venture into offering services we were not familiar or experienced with.
