This open porch transformation in the Old Emerywood section of High Point, NC is the epitome of Southern elegance. The home itself is built with an eye on elegance and was recently featured in House Beautiful during a photo shoot for the furniture market show in High Point.  Archadeck of the Piedmont Triad had to design the open porch addition in keeping with the upscale style of this traditional stunner and surrounding grounds. I think we met the mark to rave reviews, don’t you?

The porch features accommodate both a living area and a dining space. Adding to the spacious design is convenient access to the home’s interior by way of three separate French door openings. The porch also offers easy access to the surrounding landscape located just a few short steps away.

We designed the metal roof to blend along with the copper used over the bay window on the rear of the home and the copper downspouts on the home The metal roof was custom-made for this project in medium bronze. Fiberglass columns and wooden rafters add grace and majesty to the space and mimic the style of a by-gone era.We painted the rafters white before they were placed and followed with a touch-up after installation was completed. The porch interior features a plybead ceiling which we painted in keeping with the Southern tradition of painting porch ceilings blue. This hue is particularly delightful and is called “Bathe blue” which is a Sherwin Williams color. The washed brick of the home’s façade that serve as the interior walls of the porch add to the charm and nostalgic air of the space. Archadeck of the Piedmont Triad placed the rafters closer together than traditional open porch designs in order to accommodate the length they were required to span. Notice the use of the shaped rafter tails in the pergola-inspired open rafter roof — stunning!

Covered porches are also referred to as “open porches”, because they are protected from sun and unpredictable summer rainstorms. The covered porch offers the benefit of circulating fresh air with the bonus of a roof that provides shelter from the elements. Ceiling fans are a smart addition to a covered porch. They provide necessary air circulation to keep the temperatures pleasant, such as were added to this porch, especially in regions where temperatures during the summer temperatures can soar into the double digits!
