Is a 3-season porch worth it?

3-season rooms or porches are very popular outdoor living spaces in the Greensboro NC area.

Is a 3-season porch is worth your investment? A well-designed and built 3-season room could add monetary value to your home, offering a decent ROI if you sell. However, a good ROI in neighborhood, or inside one city limit might not reflect the ROI in other local areas. If you wonder about whether a 3-season porch will fulfill your needs, here are a few questions you can ask yourself.

3-season porch design

Do I need an outdoor living room or more indoor square footage offered by a sunroom?

Differences in a 3-season porch versus a sunroom can be substantial. If you need more square footage inside your home with a room that also has the feeling of being outdoors, a sunroom could be right for you. If you have ample indoor square footage and wish for a dedicated outdoor room that you can use out of the typical outdoor living season, a 3-season room is probably the right choice for you.

Either a 3-season room or a sunroom could be well worth your investment, depending on your needs, including your intended use.

Will a 3-season room improve my home’s aesthetic?

3-season porches can really be an aesthetic upgrade. Adding a beautiful sun porch with striking floor-to-ceiling vinyl porch windows really improved the look of these homeowners’ backyard space. The 3-season room ties in beautifully with the home’s existing roof and looks original to the home.

Will I be able to find a 3-season room contractor, who can build a high-quality space?

One very important aspect of investing in any home improvement project, whether it be a full sunroom, 3-season room, or any structure, is hiring the right contractor. Adding an outdoor room requires an experienced and trustworthy outdoor living contractor. Even if you plan on enclosing your patio with a pre-fabricated kit and think that it will be easy to self-perform the project, we implore you to reconsider.

Bringing the Indoors Out – Outdoor Living by Archadeck

The recent trend in outdoor living design, such as porches, features movement toward bringing the comfort of the indoors outside.

This may seem like a new concept as you flip through the pages of the hottest outdoor living magazine or surf through the home improvement channels, but the concept has been around quite sometime. The goal has traditionally been to “bring the outdoors in,” but in recent years homeowners have begun focusing on reversing this and “bringing the indoors out” by carrying the indoor comforts into the natural beauty of our backyards.   A custom backyard retreat serves to extend the outdoor season, adds living space to the home and creates a versatile yet casual space for entertaining. This is what Archadeck is known for, and has been since 1991 throughout Greensboro, Winston Salem, High Point, and the surrounding areas.

Here at Archadeck, we are seeing clients request these type of outdoor living spaces like never before. It’s no wonder you’re itching to transform your old-school patio or cookie-cutter deck into an impressive and functional space. However the space alone will not result in the creature comforts for creating the ideal “bring the indoors outside type of space.” Start by looking at trends that fit your lifestyle and have the potential of making the space irresistible; an area that becomes a destination rather than just a space.

  • Optimal outdoor room placement

Good planning and placement of the structure will help turn your addition into a successful project. Where should your structure be placed? A good design is one where the structure complements your backyard.

Winston Salem 3-season room provides a great multi-season outdoor room

If you’re lucky and have a fantastic view, you could take advantage of it! Perhaps you want your space to make the most of a shady spot or a sunny southern exposure. Is privacy from neighbors a concern? Are you close to a busy street where noise a problem? If so and if your area is limited, think about the use of landscape materials, partitions or fences to address the problem.

  • Making the outdoor living connection

Will your addition be connected to your home? If so, are you taking into consideration its proximity to the family room? A path through a family room could be an issue if foot traffic will soil your carpets and disrupt anyone watching TV or conversing. As an alternative, placing the structure adjacent to, or with easy access to, your kitchen will make it easy to move food and dishes back and forth when dining in your new outdoor living space.

  • Understanding scale between your home and outdoor living space

How will your new outdoor living space be used? If your home is small and you don’t anticipate entertaining a large number of guests at any one time, you probably won’t need a huge addition. Your plan for an outdoor living addition, such as a porch, needs to strike a balance between your home’s size, size of your household and functional requirements of the space you’re trying to satisfy.

  • Have a seat!

Tops in the comfort category are seating clusters. Thick, comfy cushions and strategically placed outdoor furniture arrangements can spark conversation and help build relationships with family and friends. Designers are big on outdoor furniture that brings people together, stands up to the elements and showcases personal style.

  • Go with the flow

It is important to have a good notion of how visitors will flow onto, within, and back out of your addition in relation to your home and backyard. Think about how family members, guests, and pets will be walking from the entrance of the residence to the backyard, from

the garage to the kitchen area, from the greenhouse or tool shed to the garden and so on.If you are likely to want a space solely for relaxation, you really don’t want all the visitors coming out of the property to merge into this area. Again, getting this right is a hallmark of good design.

If you are planning an outdoor living space and aren’t 100% sure what you want, it’s important to start asking yourself some questions, like how are you going to use the space? What views are important to you?  Archadeck of the Piedmont Triad can help guide your thinking and prepare you for your  dream outdoor project.  And, as always, feel free to contact us.

Kernersville Sunroom in Kensington Village, Just What the Doctor Ordered

Our reputation preceded us for this sunroom project in Kernersville NC.

As your sunroom builder, Archadeck will work to meet your specific needs.

When our Design Consultant met with these Kensington Village homeowners to discuss their sunroom addition, it marked our second outdoor living room project within this neighborhood. This project needed to accommodate health concerns of the homeowner, who cannot tolerate cold weather. Therefore, we set out to build a four-season space in place of their existing porch, which was rendered unusable in cool weather.

How can a room be built on top of an existing porch?

A lot of preparation is required in order to turn an existing structure into a sunroom. A new sub-floor was required to support the weight of the sunroom. We also installed new siding with white trim to make the sunroom appear original to the existing home. New sliding glass doors allow for easy access to the deck, which still provides the family with an fully outdoor living option. In order to keep the temperature within the sunroom well-regulated we installed heavily insulated Atrium brand windows with full screens. The windows are not only heavily insulated to keep the cold out, they are also low E argon and gas windows as well. Having the added comfort of screens on the windows allows the homeowners to enjoy warm days with the breeze flowing through.

By using Low E and argon gas windows, this sunroom neutralizes the effects of changing weather on the inside of the home and promotes a prolonged, constant temperature.

Low E and argon gas windows diminish the effects of changing weather on the inside of the sunroom and allow a sustained temperature. They are designed with double or triple-pane glass to protect against air leakage. Argon gas is better at reflecting heat compared to simple air. This means heat is inhibited from entering the sunroom while the interior warmth remains constant. Regardless of the season, this ensures the climate stability in this sunroom.

Four-season additions add value to the way you use your home.

Four-season room additions can greatly enhance your personal comfort and can add beauty and curb appeal to your home. Although a sunroom is considered a room addition because it requires a foundation and a roof, it delivers the luxury and elegance that a simple room addition lacks. A sunroom is a cost-effective way to add square footage to your home and increase outdoor living enjoyment at the same time.

Sunrooms offer an indoor-outdoor living experience.

As is the case with many of the sunroom additions we build, this homeowner wanted to enjoy the benefits of an outdoor room without being fully outdoors. This sunroom was also a perfect choice for the homeowner’s medical needs. These Kensington Village homeowners are elated with their new outdoor living room.
